According to reports, WhatsApp is working on a new dialer feature that could enable users to make voice calls to contacts who are not saved in their address book.
WhatsApp is reportedly developing a new feature that will enable users to make voice calls using an in-app dialer. This upcoming function, still in development, has not yet been released to users participating in the Google Play beta program. While the precise capabilities of the dialer are not fully known, it is speculated that it will allow users to call numbers not saved in their contacts. The discovery of this new dialer feature was made by WABetaInfo in the WhatsApp beta for Android, version 2.24.9.28. Although the feature is not yet accessible to beta testers, the tracker suggests that it may be introduced in a future update. If implemented, this addition could transform WhatsApp from solely a messaging platform into a more versatile calling service, potentially allowing calls to numbers beyond a user's saved contacts.
A screenshot of the feature, not yet activated in the latest beta version, displays a basic dialer layout featuring a green call button, as well as numbers and letters arranged conventionally. The purpose behind integrating the dialer is not fully understood at this time, but it is believed to aim at simplifying the process for users to call numbers they remember, without having to navigate through their contact list or conduct a search. Another potential use for this feature could be enabling users to make calls without adding the contact to their phonebook. Last year, WhatsApp introduced a feature facilitating chatting with users without the need to save their contact details. The new in-app dialer could extend this concept, addressing scenarios where users require making temporary calls, such as scheduling meetings, confirming delivery times, or arranging appointments. This forthcoming feature has the potential to eliminate the necessity of saving contacts for one-off calls, thereby enhancing the user experience on WhatsApp.
