Lionel Messi's leg injury |
In Miami's 3-1 victory, Messi and Suarez both scored goals; however, the Argentine was replaced after suffering an injury that will prevent him from playing in Miami's next MLS match.
In the second leg of the CONCACAF Champions Cup round of-16 match, Inter Miami defeated Nashville 3-1. Lionel Messi scored a goal and provided an assist before departing the game due to a leg injury.
In the eighth minute, Messi set up Luis Suarez, his old Barcelona colleague, for a goal that opened the score. The eight-time Ballon d'Or winner then gave Inter Miami an early 2-0 lead on Wednesday night with a goal in the first half.
Martino added, "He's got too much on his right posterior," via a translator. "We wanted to have him quit the game because it was bothering him, even though we tried to see if he could advance further in it."
The only game this season that Messi has missed is Sunday's 3-2 loss to Montreal, when he rested.
According to Martino, Messi is probably going to miss the team's Major League Soccer (MLS) game against DC United on Saturday.
"I wish not to take a chance," Martino declared.
Robert Taylor, who gave Inter Miami a 3-0 lead in the 63rd minute, came in for Messi on Wednesday.
With the victory and a 5-3 aggregate goal edge in the total-goals series, Inter Miami moved on to the CONCACAF Champions Cup quarterfinals.
Messi changed the game right away.
Four minutes into the game, Anibal Godoy of Nashville fouled him, earning him a free kick, but his shot was blocked. A few minutes later, the 36-year-old took advantage of his opportunity. Using his excellent vision, he fit a pass to a running Suarez, who placed the ball into the bottom right corner of the net.
The supporters began shouting Messi's name when he scored from inside the penalty area after Diego Gomez passed to him. Later on, Taylor scored with a header after Suarez had assisted.
Following the game, Nashville coach Gary Smith remarked, "Lionel Messi himself was very, very sharp in the first 15 minutes." Then, as he watched Messi trotting off the field early in the second half, he was asked what he thought.
First of all, Smith joked, "thank goodness." He has such a profound effect on the other members of the group. Although they have other excellent players, none of them can perform to his level. .. I was happy to see him succeed because, to be honest, I felt that their performance had declined, and it provided us with some motivation.
Inter Miami has played seven games this month, four of which have taken place in the last ten days. Messi is anticipated to play in two Copa America warm-up matches on March 22 and 26 with the Argentina national side.
