On Thursday, the sports drama Maidaan, which stars Ajay Devgn in the title character, opened in theaters. The movie had a poor start at the box office despite the Eid vacation, taking in only Rs 2.72 crore on its first day, according to trade tracker Sacnilk.
The film Maidaan, which tells the story of Indian football legend Syed Abdul Rahim, made an additional Rs 2.6 crore from paid screenings on Wednesday, taking its total domestic revenue to Rs 5.32 crore. These are preliminary data, though, as Day 1's final totals are scheduled to be revealed at 10 p.m.
Both reviewers and viewers have praised Maidaan despite its box office performance. Social media was used by renowned author Javed Akhtar to praise Ajay Devgn's performance in the movie and declare it a "must-watch." He wrote, "It is a factual narrative that will inspire pride in every Indian for some of our country's accomplishments, which sadly the majority of us are unaware of. A must-see. Congratulations to Amit Sharma, the director, Boney Kapoor, and Ajay Devgn for a fantastic performance.
"The three-hour film feels like a stretch in places where the drama amped-up-just-for-effect and the blaring background music threatens to overpower the action," Shubhra Gupta said in her review, awarding the movie 2.5 stars. However, not all of the musical sequences are bad. There's a really beautiful one early in the movie that goes along with the discovery of a player in an unlikely area. But eventually, it gets to be too much and too loud, and you start to want to cover your ears with your hands.
In addition to Ajay Devgn, Priyamani, Rudranil Ghosh, and Gajraj Rao feature in Maidaan. Amit Sharma is the director of the film.
